The Sigma Phi Epsilon Recruitment Process

Sigma Phi Epsilon is always looking for the best and the brightest men to join our fraternity. For this reason, our recruitment process is different than any other fraternity.

We recruit not only during the fall "rush week" with every other fraternity, we practice year round recruitment. This means that besides our formal recruitment, we have new member events throughout the year. This allows us to get to know our potential new brothers for a quarter or several weeks before giving them a bid, thus allowing us to uphold our high standards for membership and getting to know our potential new members on a more personal level. We have to make sure you exhibit the characteristics of a SigEp; that is a leader, athlete, scholar, and a gentleman. Therefore, any man who displays these characteristics is able to join our fraternity any time of the year.

If you are up to these standards, we will invite you to have a formal interview with our brothers. After a successful interview and evaluation, we will offer you a bid and you will be a member of our fraternity with full rights as soon as you accept. Then, you start our four stage member development program.

SigEp's Challenge Program

  • The Sigma Challenge is a quarter development program where you learn our values of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. Additionally, you learn chapter history, about Greek Life in general, and meet your fellow Sigma challenge members and the rest of the fraternity.
  • The Phi Challenge is a 2-4 quarter development program and is a reflective stage. You figure out what your personal values are, what you want to do, and broaden your horizons. An activity you might do as a member of the Phi challenge is read a book on leadership or have lunch with a professor.
  • The Epsilon Challenge is a 1-2 year development program that focuses on leadership. In the Epsilon Challenge, you give back. You will have a “Mentee” or “Little” who you help like a little brother. Additionally, you are required to give back to the University, Community and Sigma Phi Epsilon in this stage as a leader
  • The Brother Mentor Challenge is development program that extends throughout the rest of your college career and beyond. In the Brother Mentor Challenge, you will be preparing for life after college. This program will focus on the transition from college to the "real world" with the help of active alumni and volunteers.

SigEp does not tolerate pledging of any kind and strongly believes that we should build our members up rather than tear them down. We believe that you can learn from the fraternity throughout your college career, not just during a pledging process. Why Join a Fraternity?

“Almost everything I have needed to know about leadership for the Marine Corps, I learned in SigEp.” - General James T. Conway, 34th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, Southeast Missouri State ‘69

Now you might be thinking: “Why would someone join a fraternity?” Well consider this: 43 of the nation’s 50 largest corporations are run by CEO’s who were in fraternities, 76% of the United States Congress and Senate were in fraternities, and in the entire 20th century the United States only had 3 presidents who were not in fraternities.

These numbers may seem baffling at first but when you consider what you gain by joining a fraternity they make more and more sense. Now, what do you gain? A nationwide, intergenerational network of alumni and students who are dedicated to our cardinal values: virtue, diligence and brotherly love. You will gain access to leadership seminars, conferences, guest speakers among other types of professional and academic resources you wouldn't have otherwise.

As a member of SigEp you are provided with an opportunity to grow, mature and succeed every day. Our regular events include dinners with guest speakers, community service projects, multicultural and etiquette dinners, mixers with sororities and athletics in almost every field.

Rather than wondering what we can do for you, we want you to wonder what can’t we do for you. With SigEp you get out what you put in, every day.
